Fremont – the Center of the Universe
Located on the northern edge of the Ship Canal, Fremont is a neighborhood with a history filled with idiosyncratic individuals. The self-proclaimed “Center of the Universe”, Fremont features a mash-up of old school bohemians, young urban “hipsters”, and newly relocated techies.
The neighborhood is often characterized by its quirky public art: the Troll under the Aurora Bridge who clasps a Volkswagen Bug; a seven-ton statue of Lenin that is perpetually for sale; a rocket built into the side of a building; and Dinosaur topiaries that once graced the roof of the Pacific Science Center.
Fremont’s brick-and-mortar businesses bring both pop-culture treasures in the two-story Fremont Vintage Mall, and funky finds at more than a dozen unique spots including clothiers, used books and music stores, an artisanal tea shop, and various eccentric gift shops. Fremont also offers the country’s first 100% organic, fair-trade chocolate factory, Theo Chocolate (with daily tours), a Brewery, Fremont Brewing Company (also with daily tours), a bar with more than 50 beers on tap, and a Sunday ice cream cruise around Lake Union.
The Fremont Sunday Market is a highlight for locals and visitors, with goodies such as wood oven-baked pizzas, and exotic fare like chorizo stuffed arepas. On sunny days, grab the makings for a picnic at PCC Natural Market, and watch kayakers glide down the Ship Canal.
While Fremont has historically been a working-class neighborhood, industry over time has shifted from sawmills and manufacturing to high-tech businesses. The neighborhood is home to campuses for Adobe Systems, Google, Getty Images, and many small techie companies mostly dotted around the fringes of Ship Canal right off of the blue and orange drawbridge—yes Fremont has a drawbridge too!
